Social Behavior

“In the clear, often shallow waters of Bermuda we can witness with exquisite detail the complex social behavior of the humpbacks. I filmed these seven whales, six males with a female, over a seven day period before the male and female continued on their migratory journey leaving the five males to fraternize”

“Up north,, the humpbacks are preoccupied with feeding, putting on as much blubber as they can before they migrate south for the winder. Down south, they are preoccupied with breeding or calving. In Bermuda waters we document pelagic humpback whale behavior never witnessed elsewhere. Using Small Unmanned Aircraft we have recorded in high-definition 4k video the complex social interactions amongst the whales. Here a mother, calf, and escort head past Bermuda on their way north in a convoy for protection from the orcas that lie in wait.”

“I filmed this 26-foot yearling over a ten-day period while his emaciated mother foraged on the upwellings on the edges of Challenger Bank. We witnessed his extraordinary behavior and the group of whales that were attracted to his effervescent personality. Every time I have seen a yearling still nursing from its mother, the yearling has entanglement scars.”

“The great thing about using a drone to document the whales is the fact that the boat doesn’t have to be anywhere close to them. Typically, my boat is half a kilometer from the whales, but sometimes it’s the whales who approach the boat.”
