The following are reviews on Andrew’s book “Whale Song: Journeys into the Secret Lives of the North Atlantic Humpbacks”.

‘Never confuse credentials with qualifications. Andrew Stevenson may lack credentials, but he’s thoroughly qualified (and I’ll take qualifications every time). His great achievement is to show how someone with energy and persistence can make a solid contribution to knowledge about any animal that lives in their backyard – even when that animal is the humpback whale and that back yard, the North Atlantic. In four years, Andrew has identified more than twice as many humpback whales around Bermuda as we scientists identified in those waters in the previous 40 years.’

Dr Roger Payne, founder of the Ocean Alliance, who discovered in 1967, with Scott McVay, that humpback whales sing songs

‘A terrific book, a real pleasure to read. Its science is sound, its speculations appropriate, and its spirit is generous and uplifting. It finds the place where the curiosity of people and whales meet. An engaging and informative result from hard and persistent work.’

Dr Steven Katona, Managing Director, Ocean Health Index, Conservation International; Adjunct Senior Scientist, New England Aquarium

‘Courageous, scientific and inspirational. Andrew has skilfully woven a riveting personal account of his experiences with these incredible creatures which makes readers feel as though they are in the water right next to him. Whale Song highlights just how much we have yet to learn about the world’s oceans and the species found in them, and the profound and irreversible impacts we humans are having on them.’

Dr Greg Stone, Chief Scientist for Oceans, Senior Vice-President Marine Conservation, Conservation International

‘Most impressive is the way in which Andrew has successfully combined sometimes conflicting attributes – personal dedication and emotional commitment with the objectivity and impartiality required for observational science. Reading his “voyage of discovery” into the seldom-seen world of these great travellers makes us all long for a passion that takes over and propels us to great achievements.’

Dr Steven Gittings, Science Director, National Marine Sanctuary Program, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

‘Elegant writing that is easy to read and very interesting throughout. I learned a lot. I have been aware of bits and pieces of what Andrew has been doing but have not had the whole picture. Now I do. Great stuff.’

Dr Jim Darling, humpback whale researcher for over thirty years and author of Humpbacks, Unveiling the Mysteries

‘A book of discovery about how one can grow and achieve difficult goals. Andrew shows us how much wonder there is to be revealed in our oceans, when we take the time to look and ask the right questions.’

Dr Robbie Smith, Curator, Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo

‘This is a book about persistence, passion and discovery. Through his shear tenacity and devotion to his daughter, Andrew has provided a wealth of information about Atlantic humpback whales for all of us. We should all thank Elsa for asking the question “why?”.’

Dr Ian Walker, Principal Curator, Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo
